Obstgroßmarkt in Kathmandu - Fruit Market in Kathmandu

Sonntag morgen ist der Zeitpunkt, wenn die einheimischen Obsthändler neue Ware kaufen, um sie dann in ihren Lädchen überall in der Stadt zu verkaufen. Der Obstgroßmarkt ist der Ort, an dem man Obst sogar noch billiger als sonst kaufen kann und die Auswahl ist riesig. Bauern und Großhändler aus dem ganzen Land bringen früh morgens Lastwagen für Lastwagen mit Früchten. Der Markt liegt zwischen dem Ufer des Bhagmati-Flusses (denkt daran, das ist NICHT gut...) und einem der städtischen Freiluftkrematorien (das an diesem Tag zur Glück nicht genutzt wurde). Er wird von riesigen Haufen Müll gesäumt, die Dutzende von Straßenhunden und Kühen anziehen.

Da es sich hierbei um den Großmarkt handelt, wird alles in riesigen Mengen verkauft. Ich war mit meiner Vermieterin dort, so dass wir uns den Einkauf teilen konnten und dann war am Montag oder Dienstag auch noch nepalesischer Muttertag, an dem die Mütter traditionell mit riesigen Mengen Obst beschenkt werden.

Die Auswahl an Obst ist umwerfend. Bananen werden in der Staude verkauft, Äpfel, Granatäpfel, Orangen und Papayas in Kisten und die Mangosaison hat schon fast begonnen. Zuckerrohr steht in großen Bündeln für die Käufer bereit. Die Melonen werden in einer eigenen Halle verkauft. Am Ende hatten wir 5 kg Granatäpfel und 4 große Melonen gekauft. Und diese Woche werden wir nochmal hingehen und mehr kaufen!

Sunday morning is the time when the local fruit traders buy new goods to sell in their small stalls all over the town. The central fruit market is a place where fruit are even cheaper than otherwise and the choice is massive. Early in the morning, farmers and wholesalers come from all over the country and bring in lorry after lorry of fruit. The market is located between the banks of the Bhagmati River (remember, this is NOT a good thing...) and one of the city's open air crematories (that luckily wasn't in use that day). It is accompanied by huge piles of debris that attract dozens of stray dogs and cows.

Being the market where all the shopkeepers buy, everything you get on this market comes in large amounts. I went there with my landlady so we could share the fruit, and in addition to that, Monday or Tuesday was Nepalese Mother's Day, which is celebrated with big amounts of fruit that are given to all mothers.

The choice of fruit is massive. Bananas are brought in by the bunch, apples, grenadines, Oranges and Papayas by the box and mango season is about to start. Sugar cane in big bundles is waiting for buyers. Melons are sold in their own massive stall. We ended up with 5 kg of grenadines and 4 big melons. And this week we will go back and get more!
